Investment Resources
The New Mexico investing community offers local bioscience start-ups several sources of capital. Different funding opportunities exist depending on the stage and size of the venture. At the early “seed” phase, New Mexico Angels, Inc . (NMA) offers a source of funding for NM biotech entrepreneurs. The NMA is an organization of angel investors who work closely with emerging companies and regularly screen new early ventures. Dr. Jerry Mattingly, President and CEO of NMA, has over 20 years of experience in medical devices and medical diagnostics. Technology Ventures Corporation (TVC) is a valuable source of information and significant resources for biotech entrepreneurs early in the funding process or new to the New Mexico community. TVC offers considerable assistance to startup companies in New Mexico preparing to raise seed capital or venture capital rounds. Puente Partners, LLC., founded by leading New Mexico serial biotech entrepreneur Waneta Tuttle, incubates New Mexico biotech companies and counsels entrepreneurs in securing initial venture funding.
The New Mexico venture capital community also offers seed capital as well as later stage sources of funding for NM biotech start-up companies. Formed in 2004, the New Mexico Venture Capital Association (INMVCA) now has over 15 member firms actively investing in the state. The biotech arena is a growing area of interest for venture capital in New Mexico with recent funding events for device and diagnostics companies. Venture capital firms that have invested in NM biotech companies include Psilos (B round or later stage), Verge Fund and Village Ventures (seed to A round), vSpring (A to B round), as well as Wasatch Venture Fund (seed to A and B rounds). These firms all have local offices and are actively seeking biotech investment opportunities in New Mexico. Tullis-Dickerson is also active in New Mexico. The Coronado Ventures Forum, a networking event hosted every other month, is an excellent venue for entrepreneurs and investors alike to meet and discuss biotech investment opportunities.
