"Health Effects of Biofuels"

Joe L. MauderleyDr. Mauderly is Vice President and a Senior Scientist of the independent, nonprofit Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute in Albuquerque, NM, and President of its subsidiary, the Lovelace Biomedical and Environmental Research Institute.  He directs the National Environmental Respiratory Center multi-pollutant research program, and is Principal Investigator of the Advanced Collaborative Emissions Study, which examines potential health hazards of new technology diesel emissions.  He is also a Research Professor of Medicine in the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center.  After receiving his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Kansas State University and brief periods in clinical practice and the U.S. Air force, he specialized in research on comparative respiratory physiology, comparative pulmonary responses to inhaled toxicants, and the health hazards of materials inhaled in the workplace and environment.  His research inhalation hazards focused first on radioactive particles, and later on diesel exhaust and other combustion emissions.  He is currently working to determine the components of complex mixtures of air pollutants that cause the effects associated statistically with air pollution.  He is also leading projects to understand the relative toxicity of different components of particulate matter, and to place the health hazards of new technology diesel emissions in proper context.  He is author or co-author of 318 scientific papers, chapters, books, and technical reports, and 132 published abstracts.  He is on the editorial boards of the scientific journals Inhalation Toxicology and Environmental Health Perspectives.  He has chaired and participated in numerous advisory committees of universities, the EPA, the National Research Council, and the Electric Power Research Institute.  He was a two-term member and then two-term chair of the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee that evaluates the scientific evidence underlying EPA air quality regulations.  He has held several offices in the American Thoracic Society and Society of Toxicology.  He received the Clean Air Award from the American Lung Association of New Mexico, the Career Achievement Award from the Inhalation Section of the Society of Toxicology, and the Alumni Fellow Award from the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

In addition to Dr. Mauderley's presentation, Troy Lapsys of Incitor, LLC will speak about new trends in the biofuel arena.
