IN THE KNOW – May, 2022

Monday is D-Day for the return of in-person meetings for NMBio and our 90-plus member firms. Please consider joining us for this Lunch & Learn event that will take place at noon at the Lobo Rainforest Building in downtown Albuquerque.

We have two exceptional presenters for the event as well as a third surprise guest. Our program will focus on statewide economic development initiatives that can have a positive impact on our bioscience community. As you know, ED sits at the intersection of government, business, major academic and research institutions, and many of the state’s non-profit organizations that are focused on the revitalization and growth of their respective industries. It’s important for our association to reach out and find ways to collaborate with these organizations.

Melinda Allan, President, and CEO of the New Mexico Partnership will be our leadoff speaker. She joined the NM Partnership in 2017 and has 13 years of ED experience in NM. She works to increase the visibility of NM globally, generate viable prospect leads, and locate projects in the state. Batting second is Stephanie Tofighi, Executive Director of the New Mexico Bioscience Authority. She’ll update us on the authority’s initiatives to advance the growth of the biosciences and gain public support for our community. Our mystery guest will provide headline-breaking news on a significant bioscience project that will increase available wet lab and office space in downtown Albuquerque. We’ll also be electing a slate of board members for two-year terms.

After several months of preparation, I’m delighted to report that our life science community will have a strong presence at the must-attend BIO International Convention in San Diego, on June 13-16. BIO anticipates as many as 17,000 attendees from 75 countries. Participants in the NM Pavilion include several of our most innovative and promising firms, including BioFlyte, Pebble Labs, Nature’s Toolbox (NTx), Sandia Bio, Bright Path Labs as well as the NM Bioscience Authority, Quasr Diagnostics, AWS Biopharmaceuticals, Los Alamos National Labs, the Biomedical Research Institute of New Mexico, the Arrowhead Center at NMSU, and the Mesilla Valley Economic Development Alliance.

The goal of participating in the BIO international convention is to elevate the visibility of NM’s life science research, discovery, entrepreneurship, and innovation as well as showcase many of our promising startups by helping them gain access to potential investors or potential collaborations through networking opportunities and information sharing.

If you would like to attend and get a feel for the convention for a day or two, I have a dozen day passes available for $500 each. You’ll be able to tour the convention exhibit floor (this can easily consume a full day) as well as attend pitches by startups and social events (think drinks, food, networking, drinks). There are several daily flights available to San Diego from Albuquerque International Sunport.

Healthy regards,

Greg Byrnes

Give a Rapid Fire Presentation!

There is still time to submit your proposal for a Rapid Fire presentation at this year’s PharmSci 360.

A Rapid Fire is a brief talk on a topic that interests YOU. The format is simple: 1 speaker; a few slides; 10 minutes to present; and 3 minutes for questions.

Have something new, exciting, or interesting to tell the pharmaceutical sciences community? This is your opportunity!

Is Your Firm Eligible For An R&D Tax Credit

The R&D tax credit is a government incentive for companies that are innovating as they make or update products, business processes, technologies or formulas. There is a 4-part test for projects that a company may do to qualify said project for the R&D tax credit:
  1. Are you innovating as you make or update: new products, business process, technology formulas, etc.
  2. Is the work done rooted in a hard science (i.e., your work is rooted in computer or bioscience)
  3. Is there a process of experimentation occurring
  4. Is there an elimination of uncertain or undesirable results
Companies may claim a tax credit on expenses associated with qualifying activities that fit the IRS criteria for research and development. The credit can be applied in up to two methods. The standard research and experimentation tax credit can be used to offset income tax liabilities. An alternative tax credit for select qualifying businesses can be elected into and used to offset payroll tax liabilities.

You can qualify W2 Employees, 1099 contractors and raw materials/infrastructure spend. Questions: Contact Justin Maribito, Senior Business Development Executive for Boston-based Leyton USA. Book a meeting here  Leyton is under consideration to become an NMBio Strategic Partner
