NEW MEXICO BIOTECHNOLOGY
& BIOMEDICAL ASSOCIATION

Fall has finally arrived and that means the 2021 Knowledge Fair and Expo is upon us. NMBio’s marque event will be held, IN PERSON, on Tuesday, October 26 at CNM’s Workforce Training Center in Albuquerque. Our theme this year: Celebrating Our Successes & Future Opportunities. In addition to getting reacquainted and enjoying time to network, we want to elevate the visibility of our member firms and celebrate their research breakthroughs and expansions, discuss our challenges and learn about future opportunities.

NMBio’s board members and I are excited to announce that Dr. Douglas Ziedonis, UNM’s Executive Vice President for Health Sciences and UNM’s Health Systems CEO will be the keynote luncheon presenter. Other speakers and panel moderators include some familiar names such as Stuart Rose, CEO of The BioScience Center and founder/investor in a score of startups, Waneta Tuttle, President & CEO of Southwest Medical Ventures, Alex Koglin, Co-Founder, CEO& CTO of NTx, Tony Quinones, CEO of Bright Path Labs, Drew Tulchin, President of the NM Angels, Chuck Call, CEO of BioFlyte and Kristina Trujillo, CEO of TNeuro Pharma, Janeen Vilven-Doggett, Partner, Peacock Law, P.C., Sarah Boisvert, Founder of Fab Lab Hub and Co-founder of The New Collar Network and Dale Dekker, founding partner of Dekker/Perich/Sabatini, business leader and the new board chair of the NM Bioscience Authority. We’ll also be introducing you to new players, including Rebecca White, CEO of Pebble Labs, Howard Kosloff, Co-founder & Managing Partner of Los Angeles based HATCHspaces, LLC, and Paul Laur, CEO and Founder of Spartina Technologies.

Since this event is our major and, truth be told, only significant fund raiser, we would greatly appreciate your making every effort to attend and also promote it to your colleagues, business and legislative contacts. We are keeping ticket prices low — $60 — to encourage attendance. Sponsorships are available starting at $500. We’ve cut the price of table-top exhibits by 50% to $250. If interested, call me to reserve a space ASAP; there are only have 20 available spots. Sponsorships are also needed and appreciated (contact me for details). The doors to the event open at 8 am for on-site registration, coffee and danish. The program will run from 8:30 to 3:30 pm followed by an hour of networking and refreshments.

In other news, drug price control legislation that’s moving through Congress is one of the biggest threats to innovation—such as new treatments for debilitating rare diseases, and vaccines for the next pandemic that’s no doubt around the corner. Defeating these proposals is a major priority for BIO, including ensuring that developers of orphan drugs can continue to invest in needed innovation for millions of patients.

Please listen and share BIO’s latest podcast that describes both the amazing breakthroughs of our industry and what could be lost: How Drug Price Controls End Up Hurting Patients. Also, be sure to visit SaveCures.com to contact NM’s members of Congress and tell them why H.R. 3 will harm patients and future cures. We can expect that NM’s legislators will be considering and debating price control legislation in 2022.

Biotech has made significant strides in diversity, equity, and inclusion—but work must continue to ensure diverse talent can access biotech careers and strengthen the entrepreneurial community. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) are dedicated to supporting diverse bioscience businesses through the NIH Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs. NMBio has been and will continue to be a strong advocate for diversity.

Healthy regards,
