Serena Pack, Cliff High School Senior has added to her list of awards and successes, visiting the White House and meeting with President Obama. At this event she was representing the Girl Scouts of America, the most recent in a series of awards she has earned.

Serena participated in the New Mexico State Science and Engineering Fair in March and won first place in the Senior Environmental Science division with her work on the environmental effect of abandoned mine sites, Her research investigated finding native grasses that can adapt to harsh soil situations on mine talings As a result of her research, Serena was selected by NMBio to receive the 2012 BioGENEius award, recognizing her work in biotechnology. She represented New Mexico as a finalist in the US National BioGENEius Challenge in Boston.

Serena also won the Southwest Regional Fair’s award – Best In Show for in the Life Science Division. By earning the “exceptional Genius Award in another international competition, she will be competing at the International Genius Olympiad in New York in late June. Serena says “To address problems in our environment and find feasible solutions is of great interest to me”. We are glad Serena has chosen biotechnology as her field of interest!
